sunken lettering gave an additionalnote of interest to this piece of furniture : As for me though that I konne but layte onbokes for to rede I me delyte. The woodwork is stained a greenish brown, and seems to melt into the green-stained walls.Every inch of space is utilized, as doors, opening downwards, conceal a supply ofwinters cord-wood underneath the bench.Red denim was used to cover the mattresses, and figured denim of the same colour formedthe covering for the three large pillows.Green and red were introduced in the smallerpillows, which are covered with cretonne. A very pretty corner seat can be madewhen the window comes near the corner, andthe doorway is in the centre of the other wall.A seat can be run to the corner and returnagain to the longer wall to the doorway, andmust be finished off at the side with a wingedend. Two loose cushions will form a seat, and a piece of the same material with whichthey are covered can be carried up againstthe wall to a height of 2 or 3 feet, over

This can be capped with twoshelves for books, and makes a convenientand decorative corner seat and a book-casecombined. Care must be taken when placingthe bookshelves that they are at the rightheight, so that when arising from the seatthe head is not knocked against the book-shelves. Naturally they are narrow, so thatthis can easily be avoided. Irregularity in bookshelves adds very muchto their artistic appearance. Shelving can berun from a corner of the room to a windowto the height of about 7 feet. Below thewindow two or three shelves can be run,and the bookshelves finished at the far side ofthe window. This breaks up the wall pleas-ingly and economizes space. A window-sill effect can be given whenthe window is high enough by simply arrang-ing shelving on the line below the window, but the space should be at least wide enoughto allow for three rows of books, or it willlook meaningless.
